Atlanta, G.A. - August 9, 2011 – Fifteen-year-old Zach Conley of Alpharetta, Ga. and 17-year-old Imani Scott of Hampton, Ga. each won $2,500 in the “Shot for College” scholarship contest held on Monday at St. Ives Country Club. The competition was the highlight of a fun-filled day of golf for Atlanta-area youth, hosted by PGA pro Anthony Kim and put on by RBC Bank and RBC Wealth Management in celebration of the PGA Championship this week.
The dynamic Kim shared his talents and experience with boys and girls aged 12-17 with sessions covering golf etiquette, short-game play along with other great insights from the PGA standout. Ending the event with a bang, each participant got the chance to put their skills to the test and hit two balls at a target 75 yards away in the “Shot for College” scholarship contest. The 10 finalists closest to the hole moved on to the semifinals, where they hit one ball toward a target from 100 yards out.
Conley and Scott were the closest boy and girl to the pin, winning $2,500 each in scholarship money.
Scott is a part of The First Tee of Atlanta program, which is dedicated to positively impacting the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development. More youth from The First Tee participated in the event this year than ever before, and RBC Bank and RBC Wealth Management together will contribute $10,000 to the development program.
“We were thrilled to offer this fun, educational experience for the young people in Atlanta and wrap things up with the opportunity to win a college scholarship,” said Jeffrey Scharps, regional president for RBC Bank. “It was a unique experience for them to get first-hand knowledge from a PGA pro, especially during such an important week for the sport as the PGA Championship kicks off.”
All clinic participants in the “Shot for College” scholarship contest received a commemorative T-shirt and a picnic lunch. For more information on First Tee of Atlanta, visit www.thefirstteeatlanta.org.
