WELCOME HOME TIPTON-SMITH FAMILY!
Oakwood Homes “Moves that Bus!” and RBC Centura Bank presents check, extends mortgage-fundraising campaign
WALESKA, GA, January 19, 2007 - Oakwood Homes, LLC, its building partners and RBC Centura Bank today joined ABC-TV’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to “Move that bus!” and give a deserving local family their dream home by serving as the master builder and by providing financing for the new home, respectively.
While the construction, lead by Oakwood Homes, came to a close, RBC Centura Bank got the okay to extend it’s mortgage-fundraising campaign, MAKEOVER Mortgage Mania, until February 16. Last week, the bank and its sister companies pledged $25,000 toward the family’s nearly $145,000 mortgage. In addition, they committed to leading a grassroots campaign to pay off the mortgage balance.
“We had a great week of fundraising, and we certainly put a $100,000 dent in the family’s mortgage, but we still we have work to do,” said David Abee, RBC Centura Bank regional president of Personal and Business Banking in Georgia. “We are truly honored to help with this project. It is an opportunity to partner with a longtime client of ours, Oakwood Homes, and work with the greater Atlanta community to do something giant for a very deserving family. I look forward to presenting final a check to the Tipton-Smiths in February for the full amount of their mortgage.”
The bank hosted telethons, deployed an e-mail blitz, plastered the banking centers with posters and used their mascot, Leo, to raise awareness and monies for the campaign. In addition, bank volunteers were at the build site every day of construction collecting money. And, a number of bank employees were also able to assist with the actual house construction.
“I had no idea that one phone call to my boss, David Abee, would start such a huge chain reaction and collaborative response to address this family’s need,” said George Platt, RBC Centura Builder Finance senior manager of loan productions and catalyst for the bank’s involvement with the campaign. “It’s great to see the bank, its sister companies and all of our employees band together to help Tony Perry, his team at Oakwood Homes and the Tipton-Smith family.”

About the family
Each episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition features a race against time involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have just seven days to totally rebuild an entire house – every single room, plus the exterior and landscaping.
The Tipton-Smith family was selected to receive an Extreme Home Makeover from thousands of applicants because they have experienced more tragedy and loss than any family should have to bear. In 2005, the family’s home was destroyed in a fire. After losing their home, Faith, her two daughters and son, Ransom, selected a house plan that was to become their dream home. Three months after construction started, Ransom and his sister, Missy, were in a car accident that took Ransom’s life. Due to massive hospital bills, construction of the home had to stop, causing a hazardous mold problem that is seemingly beyond repair without the help of the crew from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and supporters like Oakwood Homes, its building partners and RBC Centura Bank.
With the help of Oakwood Homes and its building partners, a project that would ordinarily take at least four months to achieve took less than one week. The remainder of the time until the family returned home was spent decorating and landscaping.
