Waleska Family Receives Wake-up Call from ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Local home builder and bank partner to make dream home a reality

WALESKA, GA, January 11, 2007 - Oakwood Homes, LLC, its building partners and RBC Centura Bank today join ABC-TV's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to give a deserving local family their dream home by serving as the master builder and by providing financing for the new home, respectively.

This morning, the lives of the Tipton-Smith family in Waleska, Ga., were changed forever when they heard the show's team leader Ty Pennington's now-famous "good morning" wake-up call. Pennington, along with the other designers, surprised the unsuspecting family with news that their home has been chosen to receive a makeover. Each episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition features a race against time involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have just seven days to totally rebuild an entire house - every single room, plus the exterior and landscaping.

The Tipton-Smith family was selected to receive an Extreme Home Makeover from thousands of applicants because they have experienced more tragedy and loss than any family should have to bear. In 2005, the family's home was destroyed in a fire. After losing their home, Faith, her two daughters and son, Ransom, selected a house plan that was to become their dream home. Three months after construction started, Ransom and his sister, Missy, were in a car accident that took Ransom's life. Due to massive hospital bills, construction of the home had to stop, causing a hazardous mold problem that is seemingly beyond repair without the help of the crew from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and supporters like Oakwood Homes, its building partners and RBC Centura Bank.

With the help of Oakwood Homes and its building partners, a project that would ordinarily take at least four months to achieve will take less than one week. The remainder of the time until the family returns home is spent decorating and landscaping.

"Oakwood Homes and our building partners are excited to be the builders of what will be an outstanding dream home for this truly deserving family," said Tony Perry, Oakwood Homes CEO. "Oakwood Homes has been a client of RBC Centura Bank Builder Finance for many years, and we are working together to put Faith Tipton-Smith and her children in the home that her late son helped choose."

To kick off the project, RBC Centura Bank has donated $25,000 to pay for the home. These funds have been pledged from RBC Centura Bank's home office, RBC Centura Bank's operations in Georgia and sister companies such as RBC Dain Rauscher, RBC Builder Finance and RBC Capital Advisors. In addition, the bank has committed to leading a grassroots campaign to pay off the remainder of the family's nearly $145,000 mortgage. To do this, the bank created a program called MAKEOVER Mortgage Mania.

"RBC Centura Bank is thrilled to have the opportunity to make a deserving family's dream of homeownership come true," said Tom Wiley, RBC Centura Bank's Georgia state president. "RBC Centura Bank is committed to the communities it serves, and our campaign to pay off this family's mortgage is one example of that commitment to Waleska, Ga., and Cherokee County. But RBC Centura Bank and Oakwood Homes can't do this alone. We are going to need the community's help to raise the money."

RBC Centura Bank volunteers will be at the build site every day collecting donations once construction begins on Saturday, January 13. To make a donation to RBC Centura Bank's MAKEOVER Mortgage Mania, visit any RBC Centura Banking center or donate online at by clicking on the PayPal link, which is located in the bottom left corner of the home page. Donations are also being accepted for the family by contacting Brandi Hendrix of First Cherokee State Bank at (770) 591-9000.
